Double Diamond can trace its roots back to 1822, when Samuel Allsopp and Job Goodhead brewed the first Burton India Pale Ale in a teapot.
The Double Diamond trademark was registered in 1876.
Following the 1934 merger to form Ind Coope & Allsopp Ltd, Allsopp Pale Ale was renamed, and the words “Double Diamond” first appeared on bottle labels.
By 1958 it was the country’s best selling bottled beer.
“A Double Diamond works wonders!” was once its popular strapline, along with “I’m only here for the beer!”
“I’m only here for the beer!” and the beer’s popular jingle were on the nation’s lips.
Between 1966 and 1971, sales rose astronomically. By 1974, it was selling an incredible 50 million pints per year!
In 1971, CAMRA formed as a pressure group against keg beers such as Double Diamond and the market for keg began to slowly decline in favour of cask ales. A badge proclaiming “DD is K9P” was sold at CAMRA Beer Festivals. The identity of the person who did the taste comparison remains a mystery.
The late HRH The Duke of Edinburgh was Double Diamond’s most famous drinker, he preferred the beer at State Banquets.
Tony Benn, during his time as Minister of Technology in the 1960s, thought that Double Diamond was so important to the country that he wanted it nationalised.
Double Diamond was the leading light, the headline act, the A-list star.
It isn't an understatement to say that the history of Double Diamond was also the history of Allsopp's.
By 1958, DD was being described as Britain's best selling bottle. A Double Diamond”Works Wonders” was on everyone's lips.
